UC's Jadeyn Williams wins Gold Medal in sabre at North American Cup Tournament

By Jim Lambert

Union Catholic freshman fencing sensation Jadeyn Williams continued her remarkable season when she won the Gold Medal in the sabre in the 14-and-under division at the prestigious March North American Cup on Friday in Baltimore, Maryland.
Williams, who lives in Metuchen and fences out of the Advance Fencing & Fitness Academy (AFFA) in Garwood, didn’t lose a bout on her way to the championship.

At the N.J. State Fencing Championships last Sunday at Livingston High School, Williams, believed to be the first girl to ever represent Union Catholic at a state fencing tournament, won four of her five bouts in the first round and five of her six bouts in the second round to advance to the Championship Round, which featured just eight fencers. Williams, the youngest competitor in the finals, wound up sixth overall.
Last month, Williams, who qualified for the state tournament by winning the Independent Schools Qualifying Round, earned a sixth-place medal and an “A’’ rating in the Cadet Women’s Saber competition at the Junior Olympic Fencing National Championships in the 17-and-under age group at the Memphis Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
