Feature Friday: Matthew Schutz Has Made His Presence Felt at Union Catholic

In our latest instalment of Feature Friday, we shine the spotlight on Union Catholic senior Matthew Schutz.
Schutz is an Honor Roll Student, a member of the National Honor Society, a Peer Minister, and a member of the cross-country and track and field teams.
Here is our Q and A with Schutz -
How and why did you first get involved with Peer Ministry, and what do you enjoy the most about being involved with Peer Ministry?
I first got involved in Peer Ministry through my sister, Mia, when she attended UC. My sister told me about all the things she did as a peer minister, and I wanted to be a part of that as well. Since joining I have made this experience my own and some of my favorite things about being involved in peer ministry is running the Days of Recollection, they are tons of fun.
You do such a great job at all the UC masses and delivering prayers at events such as the Veterans Day ceremony. How does it feel to be asked to deliver those prayers, and be such a big part of the spiritual aspect of Union Catholic?
It honestly feels great to be a part of the Union Catholic community and I love that I get to help lead the
UC students in prayer. It may be a little nerve-wracking to speak in front of everyone, but I’m getting better and
better at it and now it’s something I truly enjoy.
How excited are you for the start of the indoor track and field season? What kind of personal goals do you have for yourself on the track and in the pole vault?
I am super excited for indoor track this season! I can’t wait to run fast in the 400 and 800 this season, as
well as vault high for pole vault. This season I really want to run around 51 in the 400, and under 2:05 in the 800. It may be difficult, but I’m definitely up for the challenge. I also want to clear 12 feet in pole vault since I
couldn’t last year. I am ready for this season to get started.
Can you list everything else that you are involved in at UC (sports, clubs etc.)?
I am on the varsity track and field and cross-country teams, I am a part of Peer Ministry, part of the
CRAYON club, Service Club and SMAC.
Can you list all the awards/honors you have received at UC.
National Honor Society
Spanish National Society.
Class of '68 Endowed Scholarship
Mr. UC Endowed Scholarship
Honor Roll for every marking period
What does it mean to you to earn those awards, and to have achieved so much academic success?
It means so much to me to have achieved so much in high school. It is honestly crazy to me that I was able to
do so much and truly excel in the classroom and on the track.
What do you love the most about being a student at Union Catholic?
The thing I love most about being a student at Union Catholic is the community that is cultivated around us.
UC has such a great community of caring and understanding people and all the students and teachers have made me feel at home at this school. I truly think of UC as a family and It is one that I am proud to be a part
Why and how did you decide that UC was the place for you to be? What was it about UC that made you want to be a student here?
The reason I chose to attend UC was a no-brainer because of the people here. My sister went to UC 3 years before I did, so I was able to see a lot about the school before graduating middle school. In that time I saw how tightly knit this school was and how the teachers truly cared about each and every student. The feeling I had when I walked into the school made me want to come here above all else, just being here has a different vibe than any other school, and I couldn’t wait to come in as freshman.
What kind of advice would you give to younger students who are considering attending UC? Why should they come to UC and what will UC give them that they won’t be able to find at other schools?

I say it time and time again, Union Catholic is the place where everyone you meet can become a good friend. Each and every teacher will help ensure you do your very best and they will even help you with anything
you need. Your time at UC will be filled with fun times and amazing people, and you’ll wish that time lasts
What specifically can you point to as the things that you’ve benefited from the most from your experience as a student at UC?

At UC, I have become a more confident person and student. I have been able to push myself out of my
comfort zone both socially and academically and it has helped me to become a better student and friend. I am
more academically driven than I ever have been and that is because of UC.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I like to watch movies, tv shows, and try to code games. In college, I want to become a programmer, so when I get the chance I try and see what I can do on my own in the field. I also work at my family’s ice cream shop, What’s the Scoop, it is a great place to work and has given me lots of experience.
What are you looking forward to the most the rest of this school year?
I am looking forward to participating in Mr. UC, I am super excited for that!
What town do you live in?
Favorite class and teacher at UC?
My favorite class is Developmental Psychology and my favorite teachers are Dr. Sagendorf and Ms.
Favorite UC memory?
My favorite UC memory is rock climbing at the Peer Minister Training day
Favorite UC Core Value and why?
My favorite core value is Community because I value the connections I have with people, and my friends
are everything to me.
How about the future? Have you decided on a college? What type of career would you like to pursue?
I haven’t decided where I’m going to college yet but my top options are Arcadia and Lafayette and I am going
for Computer Science with double major or minor in Spanish. I want to become a programmer either in the
video game industry or cyber security.
One word to describe your UC experience?
