Scott Kernen Has Made His Presence Felt At Union Catholic

In our latest installment of Feature Friday, we shine the spotlight on Union Catholic senior Scott Kernen.

Kernen, who lives in Short Hills, is an Honor Roll student, and a member of the tennis team and swim team, and he serves as the manager for the boys basketball team at UC.

Here is our Q and A with Kernen -

You are such a well-rounded student at UC. Can you list everything you are involved in at UC? Sports, clubs etc?

Varsity Swim Team
Varsity Tennis Team
Manager of the varsity boys basketball team
Student Advisory Club-

Can you list all the awards/honors you have received at UC?

First Honors every marking period since freshman year

Can you explain how the balance between academics, and extracurricular activities has helped you become a better student, and how important it is to be involved in different things?

Academics have always been my top priority. At times, I can get stressed out over school work. Being on a team, and doing other activities, made me realize that it is important to be well-rounded, and I can still care a lot about my school work, but I can balance it with sports and other interests.''

What do you love the most about being a student at Union Catholic?

I love the sense of community at UC and how we all respect each other.

What do you love the most being a member of the swim team, and representing the school?

It is great to be a member of a big team, and I enjoy the competition. We all encourage each other to do our best, and it is a big bonus to be on a team that is undefeated year after year.

What do you love the most being the team manager for the basketball team, and what made you decide to take on that role?

It is great to be the manager of the boys basketball team because I enjoy watching basketball, although I do not play the game myself. It is great to travel with the team and get to know the players, and I really enjoy working with all the coaches. Dr. Reagan suggested I take on the position when I was a sophomore.

Can you describe all the different things you have to do as the Team Manager?

As team manager I basically do what the coaches ask me to do, which has included keeping game stats and player stats, organize the equipment before and after games, and help the players with whatever they need. It’s great being on the court and, especially over the last couple of years. The night games were so fun with all the cheerleaders and all the fans.

Why and how did you decide that UC was the place for you to be? What was it about UC that made you want to be a student here?

The Success Program at UC was my main reason for coming to the school in ninth grade. I am so thankful for that program, and it got me off onto the right path where I could achieve the academic success I never thought I could attain.

What kind of advice would you give to younger students who are considering attending UC? Why should they come to UC and what will UC give them that they won’t be able to find at other schools?

I can't say enough good things about UC. I truly have enjoyed every day of my last few years at the school. The teachers are all very supportive and the school offers a lot of opportunities to find something that interests you.

What specifically can you point to as the things that you’ve benefited from the most from your experience as a student at UC?

As a student at UC, I was able to participate in all the activities that interest me. For example, I really like working in TV and Production, and I was able to get a spot on UCTV, which I really enjoy. I was also able to join two varsity teams, which has been a great experience.

How about the future, Scott? What schools are you looking at right now to continue your academic career?

I applied early decision to Fairleigh Dickinson and was accepted in November. I am also really proud to say that I was awarded a Merit Scholarship based on my high school academic record.

What would you like to major in? What type of career would you like to pursue?

I am majoring in Film Directing and Creative Writing, so at this point I would like to pursue a career in film.

What is something about yourself that most people don’t know? Maybe a hidden talent or hobby?

I almost have a photographic memory. Because I am a political junkie, I have memorized everything about the electoral college and a lot of presidential facts. Also, because I am a film buff, I can tell you who every single Oscar winner was since the very first ceremony in 1929.

Favorite thing to do in your spare time?

Browse the internet and follow political/general news, and also spend time with my family and my three dogs.

Favorite class and teacher at UC?

It is hard to pick a favorite, but if I had to it's Mr. Geisheimer. I was going to withdraw from his math class because I thought it was too hard, and he convinced me to stay, which resulted in me getting an A.

Favorite UC Moment From Swimming?

Competing in the Union County Tournament at Rutgers University. It was beyond exciting.

Favorite UC Moment as Manager of the Basketball Team?

During the 2018/2019 season, we were playing Elizabeth, and the game went into triple overtime. The players gave it their all, but unfortunately we lost. However, it was an incredible game, and we all learned a lot from it.

Favorite UC Event?

The Days of Recollection

Favorite UC Core Value?

Community because I felt a great sense of community from UC the first day I started school here. It's a diverse community where everybody belongs.

Life Motto:

Treat others as you would want to be treated.
