Union Catholic’s National Art Honor Society (NAHS), under the direction of moderator and UC art teacher Rebecca Schroppe, is launching a coloring contest, “Coloring For Smiles,’’ this Monday.
UC’s NAHS will also be creating coloring books for the residents living at The Chelsea at Fanwood, a senior living facility. The contest entry fees will be used to purchase coloring materials to accompany these coloring books.
The NAHS will present the coloring books and coloring supplies to residents of The Chelsea on Valentine’s Day, Feb 14.
"UC's NAHS club members created and planned this initiative because they want to give back and bring some joy and happiness to those in need during the Covid-19 pandemic,'' said Schroppe. " Knowing how this pandemic initially hit hard at senior facilities, a local assisted living facility, The Chelsea at Fanwood, became their focus. The idea to create coloring books grew from their passion for art and desire for service. The students believe this will be a wonderful and engaging activity and provide residents with an opportunity to keep their minds active while having to limit social interactions. Coloring helps develop dexterity, hand-eye coordination, endurance, self-confidence, creativity, and task completion.Coloring is also a form of stress relief, which can help calm residents from the anxieties they might be experiencing during these difficult times. We would like to involve our entire Union Catholic community in our initiative to bring joy to these seniors!’’
