Journey to UC: “Mary Ellen Wischusen is my best friend’s mom. She notified me of a job opening at UC. I had always heard great things about UC and was thrilled when I was hired in 2011.
The year I started I happened to be sitting across from a certain Mr. Edward Sagendorf (now Kathleen’s husband) in BTAP.’’
Biggest changes you’ve seen at UC? “UC is constantly changing. I think it’s one of its greatest strengths. The introduction of Canvas was huge, and really made a difference in the way we delivered curriculum and content. Despite all the changes, UC maintains its awesome spirit and environment – one of the things I love most!’’
What do you love the most about working at UC? “Too many things to count! For me it is definitely the environment and the people. I don’t think you can meet better people dedicated to helping their students and making the world a better place. This place is also so special to me because it’s where I met my husband, Dr. Sagendorf, the best partner ever! We’ve been able to have some incredible experiences together as a result of our jobs here. I honestly don’t think of it as a job though – more like a really rewarding calling.’’
Favorite moment/moments during your time at UC: “The 50th Gala – amazing! Distribution of my first yearbook, which coincided with the Golden Year – so cool. All the Forensics trips – we’ve been all over the country with amazing kids.’’
Awards/achievements while working at UC? First Year Teacher Award presented by Montclair State University. First and Second Place for Yearbook
Did you know: “Julius Gottilla (a longtime teacher at UC) was my English teacher at Cranford High and encouraged me to become involved in Forensics, which led to so many awesome opportunities and trips with students.’’
What are you most proud of when you reflect on your years at UC? “All the students I’ve worked with – being witness to their incredible accomplishments has been so rewarding!’Favorite thing to do in your spare time? “Hang with my son Henry, be with family and friends, and walk around Nomahegan Park.''
Favorite UC Core Value: “Compassion – so important to our society today!’’
