Union Catholic's 5K Will Raise Money for COVID Relief Programs, Adds Virtual Component

The Union Catholic 5K will provide a fantastic fundraising opportunity for a great cause and will add a virtual component when the 10th annual event is held on Saturday, September 19, race director Edward Thornton has announced.

Mr. Thornton said the fundraising opportunity will be available for every runner who participates, and that all of the proceeds from the race will go to COVID-19 Relief Programs.

"This is a great opportunity to help a great cause during these difficult times while also connecting with the Union Catholic community,'' said Mr. Thornton.
Mr. Thornton is also very excited about the virtual addition to the event.
“We wanted to add a virtual option to our event this year so that no matter where you live, even  if you are across the country and you want to still be involved, now you can,’’ said Thornton, a member of Union Catholic’s Class of 2004. “If you’re not in the area on the day of the race, you can still participate from wherever you are by logging your time on to the race forum.’’

Mr. Thornton feels the great cause of the event and the virtual piece will make this year’s race the biggest one yet.

“We are really excited about the opportunity to help those in need, and having a virtual component that will open it up to so many more people who usually couldn’t do it and want to be able to support a great cause will bring more people than we’ve ever had before.’’

Mr. Thornton also said that the Union Catholic 5K, which will be preceded by a one-mile kids walk/run, will once again be part of Scotch Plains Mayor Al Smith's Wellness Campaign.
