Paige Sheppard added to her stunning collection of records and head-spinning accomplishments when she destroyed her own New Jersey record in the 1,600-meter run when she threw down one of the fastest times in U.S. high school history at the Night of the 1600's at the Holmdel Twlight Series on Wednesday at Bob Roggy Memorial Stadium.
The junior at Union Catholic, running in a mixed race with boys and girls, stopped the clock at 4:28.77!!!! That's No. 6 on the all-time U.S. high school girls' list for 1,600 meters, and it demolished the NJ record of 4:37.65 that Sheppard ran at the Meet of Champions last June at Pennsauken High. Sheppard also holds the NJ outdoor record in the mile with the 4:33.67 she ran to finish first at the New Balance National Championships last June.
The only high school runner in the country who has run faster than Sheppard this season for 1,600 meters is junior Ellery Lincoln of Lincoln High in Portland, Oregon, who ran 4:28.43 for 1,600 en route to a 4:30.00 mile at the Nike/Jesuit/Twilight Relays in April in Portland.
The Stanford-bound Sheppard, won a New Balance National Indoor Championships this past March in the 800m, ran a U.S. No. 1 time of 2:01.84 in the 800m at the Highlander Invitational at Governor Livingston High.
Sheppard owns 5 NJ records in her legendary career.
