Union Catholic receives prestigious award from the American Association of Teachers of French

The American Association of Teachers of French has awarded Union Catholic High School its prestigious designation of “Exemplary with Honors,” recognizing the outstanding quality and impact of its French program.

Union Catholic is one of just six schools in the nation to receive the honor in 2026, placing its program among the very best in the country.

For French teacher Kamila Ciringione, the recognition is both professionally and personally meaningful.

“I am incredibly honored and excited to receive the ‘Exemplary French Program with Honors’ award,” Ciringione said. “This recognition reflects the quality, consistency, and dedication that define my French program at Union Catholic.”

Ciringione, who has spent 18 years teaching at Union Catholic, said the award validates years of commitment to student growth and cultural understanding.

“To see my program recognized nationally affirms years of dedication to instructional excellence, student engagement, and cultural exploration through both in-class and out-of-the-classroom experiences,” she said. “Most importantly, it validates the work of my students, who take pride in their language learning and embrace opportunities to grow as global citizens.”

The program was recognized for its strong emphasis on real-world language use, cultural immersion, and student-centered learning. According to Ciringione, a focus on communication and engagement has been key to its success.

“Students actively engage in interpersonal communication, interpretive listening and reading, and presentational speaking and writing on a daily basis,” she said. “Lessons are designed to challenge students academically while supporting diverse learners through differentiation, collaboration, and ongoing feedback.”

Ciringione also integrates innovative teaching strategies, including performance-based assessments, gamification, and technology that provides immediate feedback and encourages participation.

Beyond the classroom, the program offers extensive opportunities for students to experience language and culture firsthand. Ciringione has led eight international trips, along with numerous domestic and local cultural experiences.

“Experiential learning opportunities are a major strength of the program,” she said. “These trips give students meaningful opportunities to apply their language skills in authentic contexts.”

Cultural exploration is also embedded in daily instruction through music, film, literature, and global current events, helping students develop a deeper understanding of the Francophone world.

As a result, students gain more than just language proficiency.

“Students benefit most by developing confidence and independence as language learners,” Ciringione said. “They build strong interpersonal skills, cultural competence, and a deeper appreciation for global connections.”

Looking ahead, Ciringione plans to continue expanding opportunities for students while building on the program’s strong foundation, and carry on her ongoing commitment to Mission Haiti Helping Kids, an endeavor very near and dear to her heart.

“My primary goal is to continue strengthening students’ proficiency while expanding opportunities for authentic communication and cultural engagement,” she said. “Ultimately, my vision is to sustain a program that inspires students to think critically, communicate confidently, and engage with the world beyond the classroom.”

The designation of “Exemplary with Honors” is valid for three years, and Union Catholic’s program will receive a certificate and a plaque and be recognized at the AATF Convention in Boston this summer.
