UC Students Enjoy Memorable Trip To Italy

A group of eager Union Catholic students from Italian 2, 3 Honors, and 4 Honors classes recently embarked on an unforgettable journey to Italy—guided by faculty members AJ Bonadies and Elisa Maguigad.

With suitcases packed and passports ready, the group set off to experience the Best of Italy and immerse themselves in the language, culture, and cuisine of the Bel Paese.

Their adventure began in the Renaissance city of Florence, where students marveled at the iconic Duomo, and strolled across the Ponte Vecchio, and stood Evenings were spent savoring rich Tuscan pasta dishes and trying every flavor of gelato imaginable—stracciatella quickly became a fan favorite.

Next stop was Pisa, where students competed to take the most creative photo with the Leaning Tower. From there, the group made their way north to the romantic city of Verona, home of Romeo and Juliet. Standing beneath Juliet’s balcony and exploring cobblestone streets, students were transported into the pages of a Shakespearean play.

In Venice, they cruised the canals on gondolas, explored hidden alleys, and got lost (in the best way) among the winding waterways. Faculty members Bonadies and Maguigad encouraged students to practice their Italian with locals, leading to proud moments of ordering meals, and asking for directions.

The peaceful town of Assisi offered a reflective contrast, with its serene landscapes and spiritual sites. It was here that many students took a moment to appreciate not just the beauty of Italy, but also the unique bond forming among their group.

Finally, the trip concluded in Rome—La Città Eterna. The group tossed coins into the Trevi Fountain, climbed the Spanish Steps, and stood under the shadow of the Colosseum. A visit to Vatican City allowed them to witness the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica and gaze up at Michelangelo’s masterpiece in the Sistine Chapel.

Throughout the trip, Bonadies and Maguigad blended fun with learning—encouraging students to use Italian in daily conversations, explore local traditions, and embrace every new experience with open minds and open hearts.

The students agreed on one thing: Italy tastes as amazing as it looks.

By the time the group boarded the plane back to New Jersey, they had not only seen the sights of Italy—they had lived them. The journey left them with new friendships, unforgettable memories, and a deeper appreciation for the Italian language and culture.
