Last month, Union Catholic students and faculty members Madame Ciringione, Rebecca Schroppe, and Cedrick Alexis embarked on an unforgettable journey through Belgium, France, and Switzerland. The immersive francophone tour provided students with a rich cultural experience and lifelong memories.
The adventure began in Brussels, Belgium, where the group explored iconic sites including the Grand Place, Manneken Pis, the Cathédrale des Saints-Michel-et-Gudule, and the Atomium, often referred to as the “Eiffel Tower of Belgium.” A visit to a local chocolate factory highlighted the city's sweet traditions, and no trip to Belgium would be complete without indulging in its world-famous fries, chocolate, and waffles.
Next, the group traveled to the picturesque town of Bruges, the capital of West Flanders. Known for its scenic canals, cobblestone streets, and medieval architecture, Bruges offered a charming glimpse into Belgium’s historic past. Later that day, the group journeyed to Paris, the City of Lights, and began their Parisian experience with a walk along the boulevards, taking in views of the Seine River before enjoying dinner in the vibrant Latin Quarter.
The following day was filled with sightseeing at Paris’s most iconic landmarks, including the Arc de Triomphe, Champs-Élysées, Place Vendôme, the Palais Garnier (Opera House), and more. The group toured the renowned Fragonard Perfume Museum, where they learned about the art of fragrance-making, a craft perfected since 1926. The day concluded with a scenic Seine River cruise, offering breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower and the Louvre’s elegant architecture.
On their final full day in Paris, students ascended to the summit of the Eiffel Tower for a panoramic view of the city, visited the world-famous Louvre Museum, and explored the artistic neighborhood of Montmartre, home to the Basilica of Sacré-Cœur. A special highlight was meeting UC alumna Mariah Phillips, Class of 2010, who now resides in Paris. She graciously shared insights about her life after UC and living abroad.
The journey continued as the group boarded a high-speed TGV train to Nice, in the heart of the French Riviera—a destination that quickly became a favorite among students. Known for its pebble beaches, vibrant markets, and Mediterranean charm, Nice offered a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural exploration. Highlights included strolling along the Promenade des Anglais, the Cours Saleya Market, and swimming in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean Sea. While in Nice, students also had the pleasure of meeting another UC alumna, Xiyue Vanessa Sang, Class of 2021.
During their time on the Riviera, the group visited the medieval hilltop village of Saint-Paul de Vence and the Marc Chagall Museum. Though they cherished the beauty and leisure of the coast, the next leg of their journey brought them through Monaco and the scenic Italian-French Alps en route to Geneva, Switzerland.
In Geneva, students explored the Old Arsenal, the Reformation Wall, St. Pierre Cathedral, and the famous Jet d’Eau (though temporarily inactive during their visit). They also ventured to nearby Lausanne and toured the magnificent Château de Chillon, a stunning lakeside castle on Lake Geneva.
In total, the group traveled through five countries in eight days, not including two full travel days—a remarkable feat!
Reflecting on the experience, Madame Ciringione shared:
"I was fortunate to have a truly wonderful group of students, the best faculty chaperones, Mrs. Schroppe and Mr. Alexis, and an amazing on-site tour director on this trip! While some students did not know one another before the trip, they quickly formed a strong, supportive community. They looked out for each other, embraced new experiences, and demonstrated maturity, kindness, and flexibility throughout. I hope this trip inspires students to continue exploring the world with open minds and curious hearts.”
