Developing Responsible Use of AI in Education Through Professional Development

Supporting Teachers in the AI Transition: The Critical Role of Professional Development

In the rapidly evolving landscape of education, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a futuristic concept but a present reality. At Union Catholic, our teachers undergo extensive professional development regarding AI.  We recognize the importance of teaching our students how to use AI both effectively and responsibly.  As high school administrators, it is our responsibility to ensure that our teachers are equipped with the skills and knowledge necessary to navigate this transition effectively. Professional development plays a crucial role in this process, providing teachers with the tools they need to support student engagement, ethical AI use, and critical thinking.  Effective AI integration can lead to increased student engagement, better preparation for their careers, and a more dynamic learning environment.

The Ethical Use of AI and Navigating Misinformation

One of the most critical aspects of this preparation is guiding students in the ethical use of AI. As AI becomes more integrated into our daily lives, students must understand both its capabilities and its limitations. This includes recognizing biases in AI algorithms, understanding privacy concerns, and learning to critically evaluate AI-generated information.  Students need to recognize the use of AI as an assistant rather than a replacement for learning.

Moreover, in an age where misinformation can spread rapidly through digital platforms, teaching students to navigate this landscape is paramount. AI tools can both combat and contribute to misinformation, making it essential for educators to help students develop robust critical thinking skills. By fostering a classroom environment that prioritizes inquiry and skepticism, teachers can prepare students to discern credible sources from unreliable ones.

Preparing Students for Higher Education and the Real World

Incorporating AI into educational practices is not just about enhancing current learning experiences; it is about preparing students for future challenges.Higher education institutions and workplaces are increasingly utilizing AI, and students who are familiar with these technologies will have a distinct advantage. From AI-driven research tools to automated administrative processes, the skills our students develop today will be directly applicable to their futures.

A Summer of Professional Growth

Recognizing the importance of ongoing professional development in this AI transition, Union Catholic introduced a unique summer professional development opportunity. This program was designed to give our faculty hands-on experience with AI-driven educational tools while also deepening their understanding of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL).

Phase One: of this initiative involved teachers developing a unit plan using a digital platform that supports AI-enhanced educational tools. This unit plan included clearly defined objectives, lessons, resources, instructional activities, and assessments. The emphasis was not only on fully engaging with these innovative tools but also on integrating UDL applications and SEL initiatives. A critical component of this project was finding creative ways to engage students in the responsible use of AI in their learning.

Participation in this summer project was optional, and support was provided throughout the summer via bi-weekly Zoom sessions on Monday mornings. These sessions offered a platform for teachers to share experiences, ask questions, and collaborate with peers. Final projects were submitted through a shared digital folder, and teachers received fifty percent of the financial stipend upon submission.

Phase Two: of this initiative will focus on the implementation of these unit plans during the school year. Participating teachers will be supervised as they bring their projects to life in the classroom, with an evaluation of the project’s success in engaging students and integrating AI tools. Successful implementation will result in the final fifty percent of the project financial stipend.

The Role of Professional Development

To achieve these goals, we must continue to invest in comprehensive professional development programs like this summer initiative. These programs should focus on:

  1. AI Literacy: Providing teachers with a foundational understanding of AI technologies and their applications in education.
  2. Ethical Considerations: Training teachers to address ethical issues related to AI and to foster discussions on these topics with their students.
  3. Critical Thinking and Misinformation: Equipping teachers with strategies to develop students' critical skills and to navigate misinformation effectively.
  4. Practical Integration: Offering hands-on training with AI tools and resources that can be directly applied in the classroom.

By prioritizing professional development, we can ensure that our educators are not only proficient in using AI but also confident in teaching students to use it responsibly. This commitment to ongoing learning and adaptation will ultimately empower our teachers to lead our students into a future where AI is an integral part of both education and everyday life.

The transition to AI in education is an exciting opportunity to enhance student engagement and prepare them for the future. However, this transition requires thoughtful and comprehensive support for our teachers. Through robust professional development, like our recent summer initiative, we can ensure that our educators are equipped to guide students in the ethical use of AI, navigate misinformation, and prepare for the challenges of higher education and the real world. Investing in our teachers is investing in our students' futures. Stay tuned for future blog posts where we will share the outcomes and statistics from this summer initiative.
