
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Newark Catholic Forensic League earned national recognition this Memorial Day Weekend as it was named the top-performing forensics league at the 2026 National Catholic Forensic League (NCFL) Grand National Tournament held in Washington, D.C.
The prestigious annual competition brought together many of the finest speech and debate programs from across the United States, showcasing excellence in public speaking, debate, interpretation, and leadership among high school students.
Under the leadership of Dr. James Reagan, principal of Union Catholic High School and president of the Newark Catholic Forensic League, and Dr. Dave Yastremski, head forensics coach of Ridge High School and vice president of the Newark Catholic Forensic League, students from throughout northern New Jersey delivered an extraordinary performance on the national stage. Schools representing the league included Arts High School, Barringer High School, Newark Central High School,
Millburn High School, Montville High School, NorthStar Academy, Ridge High School, St. Dominic Academy, Union Catholic High School, and University High School.
The NCFL Grand National Tournament is regarded as one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the country, drawing thousands of competitors representing 430 schools and 59 diocesan leagues nationwide. Students competed in events ranging from Original Oratory and Dramatic Performance to Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Public Forum Debate, Student Congress, and Extemporaneous Speaking. The Archdiocese of Newark distinguished itself through exceptional depth, preparation, and competitive success across multiple categories.
