
The Union Catholic baseball team erupted for five runs with two outs in the sixth inning to defeat Westfield, 9-5, on Monday in Scotch Plains.
UC was trailing 5-4 with two outs and no one on base in the sixth when Logan Dorin reached first on a dropped third strike. Greg Viloria then drew a walk and Brayden Morrison followed with an infield single to load the bases. The Vikings tied the game at 5-5 when Mikey Pellegrino beat out an infield ground ball that scored Dorin. After Luigi Sacca walked to force in a run, Brian McCabe knocked in two runs with a single to make it 8-5, and then Jay Sporer singled in a run to make it 9-5.
Cody Alicea earned the win for Union Catholic. He allowed no hits and no runs over one and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one.
UC got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Mikey Pellegrino was hit by a pitch, Luiggi Sacca singled down the right field line, and McCabe, who had a big game with two hits and three RBI, grounded into a fielder's choice to make it 3-0
An error extended the UC lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning.
Westfield battled back with three runs in the third and two in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead, which set the stage for the dramatic UC comeback.
Chris Tortorella started the game for the Vikings on the mound. He allowed seven hits and five runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out seven.
Union Catholic amassed 11 hits in the game. McCabe, Sacca, and Pellegrino each collected two hits. McCabe led the offense with three runs batted in. Greg Viloria stole four bases for the Vikings. Union Catholic turned one double play in the game, and didn't commit any errors.
