For the second straight season, Union Catholic knocked Westfield out of the Union County Tournament in the semifinal round and now the Vikings are one win away from making history.
Behind a dominant performance on the mound by Chris Tortorella and an 11-hit offensive attack, second-seeded Union Catholic defeated Westfield, 5-2, on Saturday at Kean University to advance to the Union County Tournament championship game.
Union Catholic (15-10), which lost to Gov. Livingston in last year’s county final, will face Johnson in the championship game at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Kean. The Vikings are seeking their first county title since 1984.
Tortorella delivered in a big way for the Vikings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Lenny Peguero recorded the final out to seal the win.
Union Catholic grabbed control with two runs in the second inning and never trailed.
Brian McCabe and Luiggi Sacca each had two hits and scored two runs to pace the Vikings offensively. Tortorella helped his own cause by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Jason Sporer also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Logan Dorin added an RBI single for Union Catholic, which finished with 11 hits.
Westfield (12-11) cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second inning and later pulled within 4-2 in the fourth, but Union Catholic answered each challenge.
The Vikings added an insurance run in the sixth inning and backed Tortorella with flawless defense, committing no errors.
