Union Catholic advanced to the semifinal round of the Union County Tournament with a 9-3 victory over Brearley on Wednesday in Scotch Plains.
With the win, Union Catholic improved to 14-8 and earned another showdown with Westfield in a rematch of last year’s semifinal. The Vikings and Blue Devils, who split their two games this season, will play at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Kean University.
Last year, Union Catholic stunned Westfield in the semifinals by scoring 4 runs in the seventh inning to rally for a 7-6 win to make the county final for the first time since winning it in 1984. UC fell to Governor Livingston, the No. 1 ranked team in the state last year, in the county championship game.
In the quarterfinal game on Wednesday, Union Catholic’s stacked lineup was too much for the Bears to handle, collecting 15 hits and scoring in five different innings. The Vikings answered Brearley’s first-inning run with one in the bottom of the frame, then broke the game open with three runs in the second inning to take control.
Mickey Pellegrino led the attack by going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Logan Dorin finished 2-for-4 with a triple, a run scored, and an RBI, while Luiggi Sacca went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
Brian McCabe added two hits and scored twice, and EJ Onyschak contributed two hits, including a double, scored once, and stole a base. Ryan Gianchiglia chipped in with a hit and drove in two runs, while Chris Tortorella doubled and drove in a run.
On the mound, Noah Sosa earned the win for Union Catholic. He worked five innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six. Cody Alicea closed the door with two scoreless innings of relief.
Now the Vikings turn their attention to another big postseason test as they prepare for Saturday’s showdown with Westfield, looking to return to the county final once again.
