Union Catholic honored underclassmen at Tuesday’s Sophomore/Freshman Academic Awards Ceremony in the school’s auditorium.

Among the many awards that were handed out was the very prestigious Principal Sister Percylee Hart, RSM Endowed Scholarship, which was awarded to UC freshman Gia Collucci.

“On the occasion of her 35 years of service anniversary as Principal of Union Catholic High School, Sister Percylee Hart founded an endowed scholarship to fulfill a personal dream,’’ Mrs. Susan Dyckman, UC’s Director of Development and Donor Relations, said during the ceremony. “As an eighth grade student, she longed to attend Catholic high school even though the public high school was just two blocks from her home and the Catholic school tuition was beyond her family’s means. Sister felt blessed to receive a scholarship that allowed her to go to Camden Catholic High School and be part of the faith-filled environment for which she longed.

“Through this scholarship, Sister Percylee fulfills her dream of supporting that same opportunity for an industrious freshman at UC,’’ said Mrs. Dyckman. “The scholarship is awarded to a student who was determined to attend a Catholic school and is thriving in UC’s faith-filled environment. This student participates in opportunities to live his or her faith through service to others in the UC Community.’’

Collucci, who lives in Union, was surprised and honored by the award.

“When they told me I was getting the Sister Percylee scholarship I was so surprised and excited,’’ said Collucci, who plays basketball at Union Catholic. “It’s a great feeling to be chosen out of all the freshman in the school. It’s a great honor and it really means alot to me.’’

Collucci said that her freshman year at Union Catholic has been better than she could have ever imagined.

“I really wasn’t sure what to expect with coming into a new school, but after just a few days I knew right away that Union Catholic was the right place for me,’’ said Collucci. “‘All the faculty and the students here are so nice, so I was comfortable right away. I love coming to school here every day.’’

Collucci was one of eight Union Catholic students who received scholarships.
